Thesis Title: Examination of Activity Spaces: Identifying Transport Disadvantage in Rural Northern Ireland
Brief Synopsis of research: This research identifies the drawbacks associated with the processes leading to transport disadvantage, the patterns of transport disadvantage in space and time, and the consequences of being transport disadvantaged in rural Northern Ireland. It visualises and identifies individuals activity-travel behaviour patterns in a GIS environment using activity-travel diary data. The ArcGIS ModelBuilder tool was used to derive scores associated with individual levels of mobility, accessibility, and participation in activities based on the concept of activity spaces for weekdays, weekends, and for a week. Statistical analyses such as the general linear model, binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify patterns of transport disadvantage. Focus groups and in-depth interviews were also conducted in order to investigate the experiences and perceptions associated with accessing transport and land use systems.
